Rent a 4x4 in Kutaisi for the legendary drive to Tusheti. The Abano Pass demands a true 4x4 — Land Cruiser Prado, GX 460, and Hilux Fortuner with differential locks. Seasonal access June-October.
Tusheti is Georgia's most remote and challenging mountain destination. The Abano Pass (2,826m) is one of the highest drivable passes in the Caucasus, with narrow unpaved roads, hairpin turns, and no guardrails. This is not a road for SUVs or crossover vehicles — only a true 4x4 with differential lock, high ground clearance, and low-range gearing can make the climb safely. Our Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Hilux Fortuner, and Lexus GX460 are the vehicles Tusheti veterans trust. The road is open only from June through early October. Book early — our 4x4 fleet sells out for the Tusheti season.

No. The Abano Pass is one of the most challenging roads in Georgia. Crossover SUVs and vehicles without differential locks cannot handle the unpaved sections, steep grades, and narrow switchbacks. Only a true 4x4 with low-range gearing is safe for this route.
From Tbilisi, expect 6-8 hours total. The first 3 hours to the Abano Pass base (Kakheti highway) are paved and straightforward. The Abano Pass climb itself takes 2-3 hours for 70km — averaging just 25 km/h on the unpaved switchbacks. Plan for a full day of driving.
