Car rental is only available from Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi. Mestia has no rental agencies. The drive from Kutaisi to Mestia takes 5-6 hours; from Tbilisi it is 9-10 hours. We recommend starting from Kutaisi if you are flying into Georgia via the budget airport.
What is the best time to drive to Svaneti?
May through October is ideal. The road to Mestia is open year-round, but winter conditions can be challenging with snow and ice. The Ushguli road is typically accessible from late April through early November. Always check road conditions before departing.
