What to Pack for Georgia: Season-by-Season Packing Guide

Just to be clear: we're packing for Georgia the Caucasus country — the one with mountains, monasteries, and wine. Not the US state. The difference matters because Georgia (the country) has everything from subtropical coastlines to 5,000-meter peaks, and the weather can change dramatically in a single day.

Here's what to actually bring.

The Universal List (Every Season)

These items go in your bag no matter when you visit.

Footwear — The Most Important Decision

Comfortable walking shoes with good grip. This is non-negotiable. Tbilisi's Old Town is cobblestones, uneven steps, and steep hills. Monastery visits involve rough stone paths. Mountain towns have gravel roads. Your feet will hate you if you bring only fashion sneakers.

  • Best choice: Trail shoes or sturdy walking shoes with ankle support
  • Acceptable: Broken-in sneakers with decent soles
  • Mistake: Sandals as your only shoe, brand-new boots, heels

Also bring sandals or flip-flops for the sulfur baths and casual evenings.

Modest Clothing for Churches

Georgia is an Orthodox Christian country, and you will visit churches and monasteries. The dress code is real and enforced:

Women:

  • Headscarf — bring one or buy one outside any major church for 2–3 GEL
  • Shoulders covered — no tank tops or sleeveless tops inside churches
  • Skirt or long pants — some monasteries require skirts below the knee (wraps are sometimes available at the entrance, but don't count on it)

Men:

  • Long pants — no shorts inside churches
  • Shoulders covered — no sleeveless shirts

A large lightweight scarf solves multiple problems: headscarf for churches, shoulder cover, warmth layer on cool evenings, and picnic blanket in a pinch. Bring one in a neutral color.

Other Universal Essentials

  • Power adapter: Type C (European two-pin round). Georgia uses 220V. Some older buildings also have Type F sockets.
  • Sunscreen — the UV is stronger than you expect, even in autumn. Altitude + clear skies = sunburn.
  • Reusable water bottle — Tbilisi tap water is safe to drink. Mountain spring water is everywhere. Skip the plastic.
  • Small daypack — for day trips, hikes, and carrying layers when the weather shifts.
  • Basic first aid — plasters, ibuprofen, anti-diarrheal. Pharmacies exist but may not stock your preferred brands.
  • Cash backup — Georgia is increasingly card-friendly, but rural areas, marshrutkas, and market vendors are cash-only. ATMs are easy to find in towns.
  • Travel insurance docs — printed or accessible offline.
  • Offline maps — download Google Maps or Maps.me for Georgia. Cell data is cheap but coverage gets spotty in mountains.

Spring (March–May)

Spring in Georgia is gorgeous but unpredictable. Tbilisi might be 20°C and sunny while Kazbegi is 5°C with rain.

Pack for layers:

  • Light jacket or fleece
  • Rain jacket or packable waterproof layer (essential — spring showers are frequent)
  • Long-sleeve shirts and T-shirts
  • Light pants + one pair of warmer pants
  • Layers you can add/remove easily throughout the day
  • Light sweater for evenings

Spring specifics:

  • Umbrella (compact, travel-sized)
  • Waterproof shoes or shoes that handle wet cobblestones
  • Allergy medication if you're sensitive (everything blooms in April–May)

Temperatures: Tbilisi 10–22°C | Mountains 0–12°C | Coast 12–20°C

Summer (June–August)

Hot in the lowlands, pleasant in the mountains. Tbilisi in July–August can hit 38°C+. The mountains are the escape.

Pack light but smart:

  • Breathable T-shirts and light shirts
  • Shorts (for non-church activities)
  • One pair of long pants (for churches and nicer restaurants)
  • Light cotton or linen — synthetics get uncomfortable in Tbilisi heat
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Swimsuit (for sulfur baths, hotel pools, and rivers)

Mountain layer (if visiting Kazbegi/Svaneti):

  • Even in summer, mountain mornings can be 8–10°C
  • Pack a fleece or warm layer for elevation
  • Light rain jacket — afternoon mountain showers are common
warning

Don't underestimate Tbilisi summer heat. July–August temperatures regularly exceed 35°C with high humidity. Stay hydrated, take midday breaks, and save outdoor sightseeing for mornings and evenings.

Temperatures: Tbilisi 22–38°C | Mountains 10–25°C | Coast 22–30°C

Autumn (September–November)

The best season for most visitors. Comfortable temperatures, wine harvest in Kakheti, golden light, fewer crowds than summer.

Pack warm layers:

  • Medium-weight jacket (September is mild; November needs a real jacket)
  • Long-sleeve shirts and sweaters
  • Long pants — shorts season is over by mid-October
  • Comfortable walking shoes (the most walking-intensive season — best weather for exploring)
  • Scarf and light gloves for November

Autumn specifics:

  • September is still warm (20–28°C in Tbilisi) — bring some summer clothes
  • October is the sweet spot — 15–22°C, perfect walking weather
  • November can get cold, especially in the evenings (5–12°C)
  • Rain picks up in November — bring a waterproof layer

Temperatures: Tbilisi 8–28°C (varies widely Sep vs Nov) | Mountains 0–18°C | Coast 12–25°C

Winter (December–February)

Cold but atmospheric. Tbilisi gets light snow, mountains get heavy snow. Fewer tourists, lower prices, cozy sulfur baths.

Pack seriously warm:

  • Heavy winter coat or insulated jacket
  • Thermal base layers (top and bottom)
  • Warm sweaters / fleece
  • Warm pants — jeans alone won't cut it on cold days
  • Scarf, warm hat, gloves
  • Warm waterproof boots with good grip (ice on cobblestones is treacherous)
  • Thick socks

Winter specifics:

  • If skiing in Gudauri or Bakuriani, rent gear there — don't haul ski equipment internationally
  • Hand warmers are useful for mountain day trips
  • Down jacket packs small and saves you in cold snaps
info

Tbilisi winter is manageable — usually 0–8°C with occasional dips below zero. The mountains are a different story: Kazbegi can hit -15°C and Gudauri ski resort sits at 3,300m. Dress accordingly for your itinerary.

Temperatures: Tbilisi -2–8°C | Mountains -15–2°C | Coast 3–10°C

Leave room in your bag. You will buy wine, churchkhela (the candle-shaped walnut-grape candy), spices, and possibly a hand-embroidered tablecloth. Every traveler to Georgia comes home with a heavier suitcase than they arrived with.

The One Thing Everyone Forgets

A wine carrier. Georgian wine bottles are beautiful and you will want to bring some home. A padded wine bag or wine skin (collapsible, weighs nothing) saves you the heartbreak of wrapping bottles in dirty laundry and hoping for the best. Buy one before you go or pick one up in Tbilisi.
