Tbilisi to Kazbegi Day Trip: The Complete Route Guide with Every Stop
The Georgian Military Highway from Tbilisi to Kazbegi is the most scenic road trip in the Caucasus — and possibly the best short-haul drive in all of Europe. In just 150 kilometers, you climb from a subtropical capital at 400 meters to a high-altitude mountain valley at 1,740 meters, passing medieval fortresses, a turquoise reservoir, a Soviet-era friendship monument, and a mountain pass at 2,395 meters.
If you only have one day, this guide covers every stop, how long to spend, where to eat, and how to make the most of the drive without feeling like you rushed through it.
The Kazbegi leg of our 8-day Grand Highlights tour covers this entire route with a local guide who knows every curve, every viewpoint, and every family restaurant along the way. We spend the night in Kazbegi so you can visit the Gergeti Trinity Church at golden hour. See how we do Kazbegi →.

Total driving time (one way, no stops): ~3 hours Recommended departure from Tbilisi: 7-8 AM Realistic return to Tbilisi: 8-10 PM
Stop 1: Zhinvali Reservoir — The Turquoise Gateway
Distance from Tbilisi: 55 km | Drive time: ~1 hour
About an hour north of Tbilisi, the Georgian Military Highway curves around the Zhinvali Reservoir — a man-made lake with water so impossibly turquoise it looks photoshopped. It's not. The color comes from glacial silt carried by the Aragvi River.
What to Do
- Photo stop: Pull off at the viewpoint on the right side of the road (coming from Tbilisi). There's a small parking area and a bench. The view across the turquoise water to the forested mountains is one of the first "wow" moments of the drive.
- Zhinvali Dam: The dam itself is visible from the road. Built in 1986, it provides hydroelectric power to Tbilisi and created the reservoir. Not much to see up close, but the lake from above is spectacular.
How long to spend: 15-20 minutes for photos. No facilities here except a couple of vendors selling churchkhela and bottled water.
Insider tip: The best photos are taken from the south-facing viewpoint — the morning sun hits the water directly, making the turquoise pop. If you're driving back in the afternoon, the light is still good but softer.
Stop 2: Ananuri Fortress — The Medieval Showstopper
Distance from Tbilisi: 66 km | Drive time: ~1h 15min
Ananuri is the most photographed landmark on the Georgian Military Highway, and for good reason. Perched on a cliff above the Aragvi River, this 17th-century fortress complex features two churches, a bell tower, and a crenellated stone wall that frames the turquoise reservoir below like a movie set.
What to Do
- Explore the fortress: Walk through the stone gate and up to the upper courtyard. The Assumption Church (17th century) has a stunning carved stone facade with a grapevine cross motif. Climb the bell tower for views down the reservoir — the climb is steep but short.
- Lower church: The smaller Church of the Virgin (16th century) sits below the main complex and is less visited. It's atmospheric and quiet — a good spot for reflection.
- The view down: The most iconic photo is from the fortress wall looking down at the reservoir. Don't skip this angle.
Entry fee: 3 GEL (~$1) — cash only, no card machine. How long to spend: 30-45 minutes.
Where to Eat Nearby
There are several small restaurants at the base of the fortress, but the best one is Salobie (50 meters down the road toward Tbilisi) — named after lobio (bean stew), their specialty. Simple, clean, and the food is genuinely good. Try the lobio with mchadi (cornbread) and a glass of homemade wine if the owner offers.
Insider tip: Most tour buses arrive between 11 AM and 1 PM. If you leave Tbilisi by 7-8 AM, you'll beat the crowds and get the fortress almost to yourself.
Stop 3: Gudauri & the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument
Distance from Tbilisi: 120 km | Drive time: ~2 hours
After Ananuri, the road climbs sharply into the mountains. The tree line recedes. The air gets thinner. You're approaching the Cross Pass (Jvari Pass) at 2,395 meters — the highest point on the Georgian Military Highway.
Gudauri
Gudauri is Georgia's premier ski resort — a high-altitude plateau at 2,196 meters that's blanketed in snow from December to April. In summer and autumn, it's a base for paragliding, hiking, and mountain biking. The town itself is a collection of hotels, restaurants, and ski lifts — not much charm, but the views are spectacular.
The Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument (Gudauri Viewpoint)
A 10-minute detour from the main road brings you to the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument — a massive circular stone and mosaic monument built in 1983 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk. The irony isn't lost on anyone: a Soviet monument celebrating a treaty that Russia would later use to justify annexation of Georgia, now standing as a viewpoint for one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas in the Caucasus.
The view: This is the big one. On a clear day, you can see the entire Devil's Valley (Devdoraki Gorge), the snow-capped peaks of the Greater Caucasus, and Mount Kazbek in the distance. It's a panorama that makes you understand why this mountain pass has been strategically important for millennia.
How long to spend: 30-45 minutes. There's a small café at the viewpoint selling coffee, tea, and churchkhela. The walk from the parking area to the monument is flat and takes 2 minutes.
Weather warning: The temperature at the monument is 10-15°C cooler than in Tbilisi. Even in summer, bring a layer. Wind chill can be significant.
Insider tip: If the clouds are thick, you might see nothing but fog at the monument. In that case, skip the extended stop and push on — the view from Gergeti Trinity Church will likely be clearer.
Stop 4: Sno Village — The Hidden Stop
Distance from Tbilisi: 130 km | Drive time: ~2h 15min
Most guides don't stop here. Sno (სნო) is a small village just past Gudauri, nestled in a side valley with the Sno River running through it. The church on the hill — Sno Gergeti (not to be confused with the famous Gergeti Trinity Church near Kazbegi) — is a tiny 10th-century gem that sits alone on a grassy knoll.
What to Do
- Sno Gergeti Church: A short 10-minute walk up from the road. The church is usually locked, but the exterior — with its simple stone design and the valley stretching behind it — is worth the detour.
- The valley: Sno Valley is one of the most beautiful in Georgia, with fewer visitors than any other part of this route. If you have time, walk along the river.
- Local cheese: Women in the village sometimes sell fresh sulguni cheese from their doorsteps. Buy it if you see it.
How long to spend: 15-20 minutes. This is a quick, peaceful stop — the kind of unplanned moment that makes this drive special.
Insider tip: This is the last real village before Kazbegi. If you need a bathroom break or a glass of water, this is a good place. The local guesthouse near the church (ask around) will let you use their facilities if you buy a coffee or cheese.
Stop 5: Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) — The Mountain Town
Distance from Tbilisi: 150 km | Drive time: ~3 hours
You've arrived. Stepantsminda (universally called Kazbegi by tourists) is a mountain town of about 3,000 people at 1,740 meters, dominated by the 5,047-meter peak of Mount Kazbek. The town itself is small — one main street, a handful of restaurants, and guesthouses scattered on the hillsides.
Where to Eat in Kazbegi
- Café Gergeti: Right on the main road. Good khinkali, khachapuri, and a view of the mountain from the terrace. Budget: 15-25 GEL per person.
- Rooms Hotel Kazbegi: The restaurant is upscale but the food is excellent. The terrace bar has the best view in town. Budget: 30-50 GEL per person.
- Kazbegi Local Kitchen (guesthouse dining): If your guesthouse offers meals, eat there. Homemade Georgian mountain food at its best. Budget: 15-20 GEL per person.
What to Do (If You Have Time)
- Truso Valley: A 45-minute drive from town, this high-altitude valley has mineral springs, abandoned villages, and some of the most dramatic scenery in Georgia. Requires a 4x4 or a good hike.
- Gveleti Waterfalls: A 2-hour round-trip hike from town through lush valley terrain to a series of waterfalls. Moderate difficulty, well-marked trail.
- Just sit and look at the mountain: Honestly, this is what most people do, and it's not a waste.
Stop 6: Gergeti Trinity Church — The Icon
Distance from Kazbegi town: 5 km | Drive/hike time: 25 min by 4x4 or 1.5-2 hours hiking
This is the image that sold you on Georgia. The 14th-century Trinity Church perched on a hilltop at 2,170 meters, with the 5,047-meter Mount Kazbek towering behind it. It's one of the most photographed churches in the world, and seeing it in person doesn't disappoint.
How to Get There
Option 1: 4x4 taxi from Kazbegi town
- Cost: 20-30 GEL round trip per person (shared) or 50-80 GEL for a private vehicle
- Time: 20-25 minutes up the rough mountain road
- The road is rough — not suitable for regular cars. Your taxi driver knows every bump.
Option 2: Hike
- Distance: ~5 km each way
- Time: 1.5-2 hours up, 1-1.5 hours down
- Difficulty: Moderate. The trail is well-marked and gains about 400 meters of elevation.
- The last 30 minutes is steep. Take your time.
Option 3: Horse
- Available from Kazbegi town
- Cost: 30-50 GEL one way (negotiable)
- Takes about 45 minutes
What to Expect at the Top
The church itself is small and usually locked, but the views are everything. On a clear day, Mount Kazbek fills the entire horizon — a massive, glaciated volcano that dominates the skyline. The grassy hilltop around the church is perfect for sitting, photographing, and just absorbing the scale of the place.
Best time to visit: Late afternoon (4-6 PM) when the light hits the mountain directly. The golden hour photos are extraordinary. Morning is also good if the clouds haven't rolled in yet.
Weather warning: The church is at 2,170 meters. Weather changes fast. Clouds can roll in within 10 minutes and obscure the mountain entirely. If the forecast says "clear morning, cloudy afternoon," go early. If it says the opposite, wait until late afternoon.
How long to spend: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on your tolerance for mountain views (answer: more).

Is a Day Trip Enough?
Yes, if: You're short on time, you're okay with a long day, and you just want to see the highlights. You'll see everything on this route and get a solid sense of Kazbegi.
No, if: You want to hike properly, you want to photograph the church at golden hour, or you prefer a relaxed pace. We recommend staying one night in Kazbegi on any trip — it turns a rushed day trip into a proper experience.
On our Grand Highlights tour, we spend the night in Kazbegi. This means you can visit Gergeti Trinity Church at sunset and again at sunrise — two completely different light conditions, two completely different experiences. And you're not racing back to Tbilisi at 8 PM exhausted.

Practical Tips
Best months: May through October. The road is clear, weather is predictable, and the church is accessible. November through April: possible but weather-dependent — the mountain pass can close due to snow.
What to bring:
- Layers — temperature drops 15°C between Tbilisi and Kazbegi
- Sun protection — the mountain sun is strong even on cool days
- Cash — many vendors and the Ananuri entry are cash-only
- Camera — obvious
- Snacks — the stretch between Gudauri and Kazbegi has limited food options
Mobile signal: Good from Tbilisi to Gudauri. Spotty between Gudauri and Kazbegi. Download offline maps before you go.
ATMs: Available in Kazbegi town (TBC Bank and Bank of Georgia). Don't rely on them — they occasionally run out of cash.
The Bottom Line
The Tbilisi to Kazbegi day trip is one of the great short-haul drives in Europe. The Georgian Military Highway packs more scenery, history, and drama per kilometer than almost any road on the continent. The stops — Zhinvali, Ananuri, Gudauri, Sno, and finally Gergeti Trinity Church — each deserve more time than a day trip allows, but together they form a journey that's greater than the sum of its parts.
If you can only do it as a day trip, do it. Leave early, stay flexible, and savor every kilometer.
If you can stay overnight, stay. The mountain at golden hour is a different world.
